Lockheed Martin unveiled a new fiber-optic laser weapon system that can destroy it’s target from over a mile away, in seconds, reported The Business Times.
The new laser weapon, code-named ATHENA (Advanced Test High Energy Asset), blasted a truck ‘from more than a mile away’ during a recent field test. The ATHENA system uses a “spectral beam” that is described as having the “laser weapon with the highest power ever documented,” according to the Defense and Aerospace company.
“The gear will be a useful tool against explosive vehicles being driven towards infrastructure points, guard towers or military bases,” Keoki Jackson, chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin, said in a statement.
“The ATHENA system represents the next step to providing lightweight and rugged laser weapon systems for military aircraft, helicopters, ships and trucks,” he added.
