A historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, became the scene of one of the most horrific hate crimes in America when a gunman entered the building around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night and opened fire killing 9 people during a weekly bible study.
And KillsAccording to news reports, eight people were found dead at the scene. Two others were transported to a hospital, where one later died, investigators said.
None of the victims has yet been named by police, but according to the Associated Press, six women and three men were murdered, including the church’s pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney.
The suspect, a white male, is still at large. Police released the image below, and urged the public and media to remain vigilant, and to contact law enforcement if they see him.
As police searched for the shooter, worshippers and other members of the community gathered to mourn and pray.
“There is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people engaged in the study of scripture.”
The Department of Justice, FBI and US Attorney’s Office are launching a hate crime investigation into the killings.
