Scientists Discover Marijuana Can Help Heal Broken Bones And Make Them Stronger

A new study conducted by Israeli Scientists from the Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University has revealed that a compound found in the marijuana plant can help bone fractures heal faster and even make the bones stronger than they were before, according to the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

During the study, researchers selected a group of rats with mid-femoral fractures and injected some of them with CBD. The healing process was then observed and compared with rats who had not received any marijuana chemicals. They found that broken bones healed much faster and stronger when the patient received the non-psychoactive compound cannabidiol, or CBD, the Huffington Post reports.

The post notes that “CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” according to Dr. Yankel Gabet, one of the lead researchers.

“After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future,” Dr. Gabet said in a statement. “The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point,” he added.

“Humans have a naturally occurring endocannabinoid system, which regulates a number of physiological processes as well as the skeleton. The human brain and body are thus prepped to be responsive to cannabinoids, even those from an outside source like marijuana,” researchers explained.

The number of benefits to medical marijuana continues to expand. Similar studies in recent years have demonstrated that cannabis have been tied to better blood sugar control and may help slow the spread of HIV.

Another research suggests CBD may also be effective in reducing inflammation brought on by multiple sclerosis, stopping metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, killing cancerous cells in people with leukemia and serving as an alternative antipsychotic treatment, the Post noted.

However, under U.S. federal law, marijuana remains technically illegal, Seventeen U.S. states have legalized CBD for medical use or research, and 23 other states have more broadly legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Still, the federal government continues to ban the plant, classifying it as one of the “most dangerous drugs in the world.”
