While digging in his soybean field to clear out room for a natural gas pipeline, a Michigan farmer named James Bristle made an incredible discovery.
The digging was going smooth until he struck something hard. He thought he hit a rock or a buried fence post and began to dig it out, but was shocked to unearth a giant rib bone.
Bristle contacted authorities and a team of paleontologists arrived on scene to help excavate the rest of the creature, a Mammoth who died between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago.
Researchers were able to retrieve the mammoth’s skull, pelvis, tusks, shoulder blades, various vertebrae, and ribs. Watch the video of the excavation below:
