Her name means ‘close to dying’ – and that is exactly how Wounda, the chimpanzee, was found before being rescued by the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo.
But thanks to the expert care provided at Tchimpounga, Wounda overcame illness and regained her strength. And when she was finally released after being nursed back to health, she repaid the kindness by hugging her rescuer as she realized she was free again. The touching moment was captured n the video below:
