Images from a NASA satellite have revealed mysterious, massive patterns on the Earth’s surface. The unusual geometric shapes are located in Kazakhstan. The space agency released clear satellite photographs of the figures from about 430 miles in the sky.
The images show colossal squares, crosses, swastikas and rings, some of which reach over a mile in length. According to archeologists, the massive geometric patterns were built to align with the sunrise on the winter solstice and seem to have an astronomical significance.
Experts believe the wheel-shaped patterns date back some 8,500 years, making them older than the famous geoglyphs in Peru called Nazca Lines.
“I’ve never seen anything like this; I found it remarkable,” Compton J. Tucker, a senior biospheric scientist for NASA who provided the archived images, told reporters.
“Though the wheels are difficult to make out on the ground, they are not invisible. One can’t see the finished product standing at ground level, but one can still determine a general geometric configuration,” Rollefson told Live Science.
In a paper published recently in the Journal of Archaeological Science, the archeological team wrote: “The works demonstrate specific geometric patterns and extend to several kilometers, evoking parallels to the well-known system of geometric lines of Nazca, Peru.”
NASA said it will use some of its resources towards the study of this patterns.
