Doctors: A Black Ring Around The Neck Could Be a Sign Of Diabetes

When 14-year-old Pantera Myhill started complaining of persistent headaches, constant mood changes and insatiable thirst, her family didn’t think anything was wrong… until she developed a “strange ring” around her neck.

There are several signs and symptoms associated with diabetes type 1 and type 2. But one symptom that is usually overlooked by individuals who are going through pre-diabetes, however, is a dark ring around the neck.

According to The Mayo Clinic, Neck discoloration diabetes is specifically a sign of severe insulin resistance or a condition called ‘acanthosis nigricans‘. Aside from having black neck diabetes, the usual areas affected are the knees, elbow, armpits, and knuckles.

Diabetes is a condition in which the person has high blood glucose, either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will become increasingly thirsty and hungry. They also experience polyuria (frequent urination).

Pantera learned this firsthand when she began to notice sudden changes in her health. Her family shared her story with several media outlets to bring awareness to this condition.

CBS News picked up the story in the video below:

Although most people may think this is indicative of poor hygiene, if you happen to see a loved one with this mark, you may want to warn them. it could mean something really serious.
