LeBron James, 4-time MVP award winner and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar, has every reason to celebrate after his team’s victory in the 2016 NBA finals championship series. However, his recent announcement has many in pure shock.

He returned to his hometown of Akron, Ohio with the intention of giving back. LeBron James, who sometimes refers to himself as “just a kid from Akron”, is ready to commit $87 million in scholarships for the children who dedicate themselves to complete his “I Promise” campaign.

Teaming up with the University of Akron, the 1,100 students currently in the program plus the 1,200 expected to join will have a 4-year-scholarships ready for them.

Annual tuition and service fee at the university is currently $9,500, meaning a 4-year stay will amount to $38,000. With a potential 2,300 students having $38,000 scholarship each, the total amounts to $87.4 million – an astonishing amount for anyone.

Students are expected to graduate from Akron’s public school system with a certain grade point average while satisfying a community service obligation. Addition criteria for earning the scholarship have yet to be finalized.

James stated at an event for the students, “It’s the reason I do what I do… These students have big dreams, and I’m happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They’re going to have to earn it, but I’m excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures.”

Michele Campbell, LeBron James Family Foundation’s executive director, said, “He has a chance to change their futures… Not everybody can be an NBA superstar, so to be able to provide the framework to make your dreams come true is overpowering.”

LeBron James grew up in single-parent home, and he understands the impact this will have on those 2,300 students.
