Officer Saved A Little 5-Year-Old Girl From A Raging Fire, 18 Years Later He Attends Her College Graduation

Five-year-old Josi Aponte was saved from a raging fire by officer Peter Getz Back in 1998, 18 years later that same officer attended Aponte’s college graduation.

It was the summer of 1998, Officer Getz arrived to a burning apartment building in Hartford, Connecticut, when a firefighter handed him a 5-year-old girl who was covered in ashes and unresponsive. Getz knew the situation was crucial and he had no time to wait for the ambulance to arrive. He placed Aponte in the back seat of his patrol car and gave her CPR while his partner drove them the car to the hospital.

Getz’s CPR saved Aponte’s life that day. She had been in cardiac arrest but by the time they reached the emergency room, Aponte had been breathing on her own.

Aponte has been very grateful for her second chance at life. “I almost died, but I was given a second chance at life,” she said. “And it was because of Peter and all the authorities, everyone who came to help that day.”

Two years ago, the two were able to reconnect when Aponte saw an online picture of Getz carrying her away from the fire. She sent the Officer a message and they have been in touch ever since. When it came time for Aponte’s graduation, it was only natural that she invited Officer Getz.
