Usually when a child misses school is because they’re sick. This was not the case for many students at Gibson elementary.
When principle, Dr.Melody Gunn, noticed that many of the students were missing days of school, she became concerned. Gunn wanted to find out what was keeping kids from showing up for class.
She took the initiative and went door-to-door to find out where her students were. When she started asking parents, she was astonished by the response. Many of the students weren’t going to school because they didn’t have clean clothes. They were embarrassed to use the same clothing they used the day before.
Gunn wanted to help out her students with this problem. She contacted Whirlpool and told them the situation. They seemed more than happy to help.
Whirlpool donated a washer and a dryer to the school. Gunn told the students that if their parents were unable to wash, that they could bring their dirty clothes in a bag and the school would take care of it.
The kids were happy with the idea and the attendance rate rose to a staggering 97 percent!
