Teen Walks 4 Hours Everyday To Get To Work, Officer Notices And Buys Him A Bike

A true act of kindness occurred last month in Benicia. Officers gave a teen a very convenient gift after finding out his daily commute.

It was one September night when officer Kirk Keffer, of the Benicia Police Department, spotted teen, Jourdan Duncan, walking home after finishing a night shift. Keffer thought it was odd to see someone walking around the area. He told reporters, “Usually in the industrial area, there’s no foot traffic, so it was kind of weird to see someone walking around on foot.”

The officer pulled up to the teen. Duncan told Keffer that he was walking back to his parents house in Vallejo. “Vallejo? That’s like seven miles away,” Keffer said. The officer immediately offered the teen a ride back to his house.

While in the car the two had a conversation. Keffer asked the teen why was he walking, why was he not driving to work?

Duncan told the officer that his car had recently broke down and didn’t mind the walk to and from work. He sad that he enjoys going to work and being around his co-workers.

Duncan also told reporters, “I don’t want to feel like I’m a burden to people so I take the initiative to handle myself and where I need to go from point A to point B.”

Keffer told Duncan about his career as an officer. That’s when the teen told him that he’s working to pay for school because one day he wants to be an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

The officer was impressed with the teen’s work ethic and drive to achieve his goals. He mentioned Duncan’s story to his fellow officers, they all decided that they were going to surprise the teen with a brand new mountain bike.

“There’s not a lot of 18 year olds out there that have this dedication we just wanted to make sure he know how much I appreciated what he’s doing,” Keffer said.

When Duncan received his new bike he was beyond grateful. He calls his bike his best friend, and it cuts his travel time in half.
