Bus Rapist Blames His Victim, 'She Should Have Remained Silent And Allow The Rape'

In an interview from jail, Mukesh Singh, one of the men sentenced to death for raping and killing a 23-year-old woman during a brutal 2012 gang attack in New Delhi, said that “if their victim had not fought back she would not have been killed.”

Mukesh Singh made the comments during an interview for the BBC documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin. “The woman should have remained silent and allowed the rape,” he said. Singh was driving the bus for much of the time that the woman was being attacked.

During the interview, Singh suggested that “the attack was to teach the woman and her friend a lesson that they should not have been out late at night.”

The woman and her friend were returning home from seeing a movie when they got on the bus. The attackers beat her friend and took turns raping the woman. They penetrated her with a rod, leaving severe internal injuries that caused her death.

The case galvanized public anger in India over sexual attacks and the inability of authorities to stop them, prompting hundreds of thousands of Indians to take to the streets in protest.

Indian culture has a deeply rooted preference for men. The mistreatment of women start early with sex-selective abortions and even female infanticides. Girls get less medical care and less education than their brothers.

For most women in this country, there are few real choices. Tradition says they will get married and become mothers, preferably of boys. If they work, the money will go to their fathers or their husbands.

The horrendous crime got so much international attention that Singh and three other men were convicted in 2013 in an unusually fast trial for India’s chaotic justice system. Appeals against their death sentences are pending in the Supreme Court.

What’s your opinion about India’s culture of discrimination against women?
