NASA’s scientists just got one step closer to figuring out if the red planet can support life after Curiosity Rover made a surprising find on it, reported Space.com.

The rover detected a huge spike in methane gas in the atmosphere around mars and measured other organic molecules in a rock-powder sample collected by the robotic laboratory’s drill.

While finding significant amounts of methane on Mars isn’t a sure-fire sign of present life, researchers are particularly interested in finding methane on alien worlds because living organisms produce an overwhelming amount of the gas on Earth.

Is there life on Mars?  Hard to say, but the recent finding suggests that we may be in for a big surprise. The results of the Curiosity rover investigation were discussed at a news briefing Tuesday at the American Geophysical Union’s convention in San Francisco.
