A CCTV captured the tragic moment when a 3-year-old boy wandered outside a Toronto apartment wearing only a T-shirt, diaper and boots as temperatures plummeted to -30F.

Elijah Marsh, 3, left the apartment building where he was staying with family, and couldn’t get back in. After noticing the boy was missing, his family started a frantic search, joined by neighbors, friends and police. What followed is truly heartbreaking.

The boy was found frozen to death after spending six hours alone in frigid temperatures. Officers wept as they carried his body to an ambulance, reported local media.

Surveillance video shows a boy who looks like Elijah leaving the home at about 4:05 a.m. Police didn’t confirm as to how the toddler ended up outside alone.

“It really is a tragic set of circumstances,” Toronto police chief Bill Blair said.

The community set up a crowd-funding site to help Elijah’s family with funeral costs. So far, $146,000 in donations have rolled in from more than 3,000 people, according to the report.
