Sinkhole In South Korea Instantly Swallows Two People

Published on Mar 3, 2015

Two bus passengers in Seoul, South Korea, were swallowed by a sinkhole after exiting the bus at their stop Friday, reported The Guardian.

The terrifying moment was captured on the surveillance camera of the bus. The video shows the moment the unlucky travelers plummeted and disappeared when the sidewalk they stepped out onto gave way.

Scientists disagree on the main cause of the mysterious phenomenon. However, a recent study published in the New York Times suggests that naturally occurring sinkholes happen when a surface layer of earth gives way due to the erosion of the bedrock below. The Korean Geotechnical Society is investigating the cause of the sinkhole.

Firefighters rescued the devoured man and woman, who suffered only minor injuries, according to The Huffington Post.
