Meet Kayla Montgomery, a teenage runner from Winston-Salem, N.C. She is one of the top long distance runners in the country. But that’s not the highlight of this story. Her battle with a terrible debilitating condition and her remarkable display of perseverance is what truly inspired us.
When the starting gun sounds at the running track, Kayla Montgomery takes off, fighting to come out on top. But then her legs go totally numb and she collapses at the finish line… every time. The 18-year-old runner sets records, wins state titles, but she is also battling with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Given the impairments that Multiple Sclerosis places on muscles and physical coordination, Kayla’s accomplishment in the running track is truly miraculous.
MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Kayla’s determination to continue running despite her condition is nothing short of astonishing. The video below tells her story:
This amazing girl is running one step ahead of Multiple Sclerosis, proving that dreams are still achievable no matter what hand you’ve been dealt.
