Vince Lombardi once said “he greater accomplishment is not in ever falling, but rising up again.” For this young man, it meat crawling across the finish line.
The clip below shows 16-year-old runner Ben Perron and his agonizing final 50 meters after his body collapsed during a State Cross Country Championships in Boston. His excruciating finish is one of the most courageous, heart-wrenching finishes you’ll see at any level of sports, from amateurs to professionals.
The 16-year-old junior student fell to the ground coming down the home stretch of the 5-kilometer course. Crawling on all fours, trying to get up, falling flat on his face several times, he eventually rolled across the finish line while emotional fans cried, cheered and exhorted him on.
He wound up 144th out of 146 finishers. Paramedics later determined he was suffering from severe dehydration.
