Call it mother’s intuition. When Julie Fitzgerald looked at her son Avery on the eve of his second birthday, she knew something was wrong.

The concerned mother noticed an usual twinkle in the back of her 2-year-old son’s eye. After a brief search online she came across a story about a woman who found cancer in relatives after she saw a white eye instead of the normal red eye in family photos. Chills ran down her spine.

“I took a picture, and I did not want to take the picture because I had this dreaded feeling in the pit of my stomach,” Julie told NBC affiliate WREX. I took the picture, and “boom,” his whole pupil was just white, and that’s when I knew,” she added.

The family is awaiting the results of testing to see if he has a genetic marker that could indicate the risk for more cancer. Avery will eventually get a prosthetic eye.

Thank God this mother acted on her intuition. We hope this young boy is free of cancer and go on with a normal life.
