The prodigious minds at MIT’s Biomimetics Robotics Lab just created something that seems out of a science fiction movie: A robotic Cheetah capable of trotting, galloping, and jumping in a way that will blow your mind.

The robot cheetahs is not only fast, it can also detect and jump over obstacles. In order to achieve the robot’s amazing jumping ability, the brilliant researchers at MIT wrote new algorithms, allowing the robot to detect obstacles – in real time – and use that data to measure the distance and height of the upcoming obstacles, and then adjust the Cheetah’s footsteps for a jump that will clear the obstacle in time.

In the video below, researchers place obstacles on a running track and let the robot run free, without a safety harness. The result? Mind-blowing. Watch:
