Taking good care of the elderly is not only our duty, it should be an honor. So when this family moved their mother, 84-year-old Hope Shepherd, who suffers from dementia, to the Berea Gardens Retirement Foundation Lily Kirchmann home in East London, they expected that she would be treated with the utmost care and attention. But they were shocked to learn otherwise in the most horrifying way.

A hidden camera footage reveals that the elderly woman was being abused by her caregiver, Ncendiswa Mkencele. In the video below, Mkencele can be seen hitting Shepherd and pushing her around.

When confronted by Shepherd’s relatives, Mkencele said that “Shepherd had used racial slurs on occasion.” But whether or not Ms. Shepherd was behaving poorly, as a caregiver, it is her job and responsibility to help those who can’t quite help themselves, like Shepherd.

According to media reports, Shepherd’s family acknowledged that Berea Gardens had complained about the 84-year-old getting physical with their staff, and Mkencele expressed remorse for the way she handled the situation. Mkencele was terminated from her job and is currently being investigated by the police.
