Archeologists Make Shocking Discovery Under Easter Island's Mysterious Stone Heads

Easter Island’s mysterious stone heads are well-known as simply that – heads. But a recent excavation revealed a shocking secret buried beneath the earth: the massive stone heads have incredibly huge bodies carved with symbols, so geometrically perfect, that scientists are scratching their heads in awe.

The team also found large quantities of red pigment, some of which may have been used to paint the statues.

The Easter Island Statue Project has been carefully excavating two of 1,000-plus statues on the islands, trying to uncover the secrets of the mysterious stones, and the people who built them. So far, they have exposed the torsos of two 24-feet tall statues, according to Project director Jo Anne Van Tilburg.

“Thousands, of visitors to the island have been astonished to see that, indeed, Easter Island statues have bodies!” she said.

The images attracted so much interest that the Easter Island Statue Project’s website crashed under a rush of millions of hits.

A new excavation project is underway and intends to document for the first time the complex carvings found on the buried statues’ bodies. As of who built the statues and why, or how they got to the island, still remains a mystery.
