This heartbreaking photograph shows the moment a Houston Police officer hugs his horse partner who laid motionless on the pavement after she was hit by a truck.
The 6-year-old horse named Charlotte was ridden by Officer D. Herrejon in the center lane when a noise from behind startled her. The horse turned to the side and backed into the front grill of a passing concrete truck in the next lane.”

“Her back legs were severely injured and she was put to sleep at the scene,” she added.
Officer Herrejon, who was injured during the accident, cradled Charlotte’s head and stroked her as she slipped away. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is recovering well.

Houston Police Department paid tribute to the horse and released a statement saying: “Charlotte loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for four years. She will be missed.”
The truck driver did not appear to be at fault, police said.
Rest in peace Charlotte. Thank you for your service!
