According to several news outlets, a toddler walking alone to the nursery led an off-duty cop to her mother’s dead body.

As reported by The Guardian, the officer was driving with his wife in Shobnall Road, Burton-upon-Trent, UK, when he spotted a two-year-old girl walking alone on the side of the road. When the officer asked the girl if she was OK, the girl told him that she was going to the nursery since she wasn’t able to wake her mom up.

The officer followed the girl back to her house and discovered a devastating scene, the girl’s mother, 30-year-old Nicolla Rushton, dead.

“The police officer and his wife took the time to look after the little girl and stay with her until emergency services arrived. Sadly, nothing could be done to help the woman,” Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey said told The Independent.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time,” he added.

The little girl is now in the care of relatives as police investigate the case.
