Firefighters' Random Act Of Kindness For Homeless Man Goes Viral

When members of the City of Riverside Fire Department in California spotted an elderly homeless man walking barefoot on the side of the road earlier this month, they stopped to help him. But they never expected this random stop would go viral.

The concerned firefighters pulled over and noticed the man was barefoot. David Gilstrap offered up his own tennis shoes for the man’s use. Then Capt. Rob Gabler walked up to the elderly man and assisted him to a safe area.

Then he proceeded to help the man put his new shoes on.

The thoughtful gesture was caught on camera and shared on the department’s Facebook page, where it got the attention of thousands of users who have praised the wonderful act of kindness.

Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst says that “the gesture exhibits what it means to be a part of the fire department.”

He told The Huffington Post: “Our agency is part of the fabric of the community – we’re building that relationship with the community,” he said. “And we want to let them know that we’re here for them in all aspects, not just fighting fires and emergency and rescue services. We’re here for you.”

Please SHARE this selfless act of compassion if you believe firefighters are heroes.
