This heartwarming story about the miraculous recovery made by a dog suffering from mange so severe her skin had ‘turned to stone’ has touched the heart of millions.
The helpless stray dog, who has been named Petra, was suffering from mange – a skin disease caused by parasitic mites that results in severe itching and hair loss – and her coat had become as hard as stone.
A woman spotted the terrified pooch outside Athens, Greece in April 2015, and decided to do something to help her.
According to The Dodo, she took a photo and posted it to Facebook, in hopes that the right people would see it and come to help.
The 5-year-old mixed breed dog was in excruciating pain and had no way of knowing that day would mean the end of her suffering. But a happy ending was around the corner for this particular pooch.
Petra had seemingly never interacted with people before, so she would run away if anyone came too close. Rescuing her was extremely difficult, but these loving rescuers refused to give up.
Eventually, rescuers were able to catch the frightened pup. At the rescue centre, staff began rubbing lotion into the dog’s broken and crusting skin to relieve some of the pain.
While at the centre the dog also enjoys her first ever bath and after a little while some of the scabs start to fall off.
Now, Petra is completely unrecognizable. She is no longer skinny and mange-ridden, or terrified of interacting with people.
She has become the most beautiful dog, both inside and out.

Petra is still searching for her forever home, and is ready to join her future family.
