According to the Humane Society, every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles. On an average day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes.
This dog owner never thought that leaving his dog alone in the car with the windows close during a hot day would make international news. But that’s what happened when a passerby snapped a photo of the sign he left in the window and posted it on Twitter.
The sign urges passers-by “not to smash the windows,” because the “air-conditioning is on, the dog has water and is also currently listening to his favourite music.” The image, posted by user @fioses, took Twitter by storm, and within hours had been retweeted thousands of times.
The sign may protect the car window, but is leaving your dog by itself in a car ever a good idea?
“It would be down to the person who spotted the dog to make a judgement call to see if it was in distress,” a SPCA spokeswoman told Tabooya.
