When Natalie and Adam Questell found out they were expecting, they were not only thrilled, their jaws dropped when the doctor revealed that Natalie was pregnant with triplets!

The pregnancy was going fine. But when Natalie was brought to the delivery room, doctors discovered a major complication. Natalie’s liver, kidneys, and lungs were failing. She was diagnosed with “acute fatty liver of pregnancy”. Adam was on his way home from the hospital to pick up an overnight bag when the doctors called him to summon him back immediately.

Natalie was placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks. Her complex health required her to deliver her triplets under general anesthesia at 30 weeks’ gestation. All three babies (Aidan, Alexa and Evelyn) faced complex challenges ahead.

She was diagnosed with “acute fatty liver of pregnancy” and was placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks. While Natalie was treated for her serious health issues, the triplets received constant care at Texas Children’s Newborn Center. There were many health issues among them, including meningitis, a staph infection, and feeding issues.

When she finally woke up, Natalie didn’t even know if she had delivered her babies or not. Imagine that. It was up to the nurses to “bridge the gap” between Natalie and the triplets, and help Natalie understand the momentous events that had unfolded. Less than two months later, the new family was home, starting their lives together.

While Natalie was treated for her serious health issues, the triplets received constant care at Texas Children’s Newborn Center until they were strong and healthy enough to breathe on their own.
