A wife had taken her husband and dad to see some of the rock pools in Mt. Glorious National Park. As they approached the pools and made their way down the creek, the noticed something moving at the edge of stream. The cautiously approached, expecting local wildlife. However, what they saw was simply heartbreaking.

The dog had fallen into the deeper section of the pool, and had constantly struggled to get out. Exhausted and without success, the pup lay limp in the freezing water.

The three knew they had to get the dog out, otherwise it would die. However, they approached cautiously, as it wasn’t clear whether this dog was wild or domesticated. They gently looped a rope around the dog’s head and shoulders. After a short struggle, they pulled out the dog who then laid timidly amongst the three, without aggression. She then tried running away into the bush, but was too tired to get far.

Turns out, this dog was a desexed female. She had been domesticated at one point, and had either been abandoned or lost by her previous owner.

“Even though she wasn’t interested in coming to us, we knew again that we couldn’t leave her there,” the wife wrote. “She was in a completely inhospitable section of bush, in a gully with cliff face and hectares of national park on one side, and a scrubby, rocky, unscalable bank up to a busy road on the other.”

The dog was depressed, exhausted and had no desire to leave. However that didn’t stop these three from rescuing her. Although it was clear that the dog had been surviving by her lonesome for several days, she still had quite some weight – she was dubbed ‘Miss Piggy’.

The group started thinking of ways they could get the pup out of the area with steep cliffs. Coaxing her to follow was out of the option – she was too tired to move anyway. Soon, they came up with an ingenuous plan.

With climbing rope and a canvas bag, they planned to made a harness. While they looked for a big enough stick, the wife decided to calm Miss Piggy and gain her trust.

“Miss Piggy was understandably frightened and worn out, so we sat a bit longer trying to give her some time to calm down, with lots of pats and reassurance,” she wrote. “The little sweetie showed her appreciation of our patience by wriggling over to me and resting her head on my leg.”

They soon placed Miss Piggy in the canvas to see if it could support her weight.

Onward to the car! By this point, Miss Piggy had calmed, and her entire attitude had changed.

“During the trip home, she seemed to relax a lot more”, wrote the wife. “When we opened the back of the car, we were greeted with a different dog – the little tail was going a mile a minute.”

They took to the internet to see if anyone had been looking for this lost pup. Within 30 minutes of posting to Facebook, they received a message from a man just 15Km north of the creek.

“He was absolutely sure this was his dog, who’d been lost since Jun 30 after wandering our off their yard,” she wrote. “He confirmed that ‘Elly-Bobby’ (named after Ricky Bobby) was indeed his little girl, with various physical characteristics to prove it. Bobby’s dad had mounted massive FB and poster campaigns to find her.”

They soon arranged a meet. Elly-Bobby, aka Miss Piggy, was finally home at last!
