A proud mom who was showing off her new baby at the supermarket in Wythenshawe, near Manchester, was left traumatised when a man suddenly punched the newborn baby in the head and then claimed he thought the “baby was a doll.”

Amy Duckers explained that while she was shopping at Tesco, a neighbor had come over to look at five-day-old Elsie Rose when the man approached and “punched the baby in the head.”

“We all heard the punch land on my little baby. We didn’t react at first as we were just so shocked. Then I just screamed,” Duckers told police. “He could easily have killed her,” she said, fighting back tears.

She added: “He then just apologized and said ‘sorry I thought it was a doll.’”

The baby, who weighs just 6lbs 12oz, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance but is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Police have arrested a 63-year-old man in connection with the incident, according to local reports.
