A single mother who was desperate for work thought she snagged the perfect job when she got hired to be a part-time babysitter for $25/hr. But she never imagined she was walking into a despicable scam.

According to Shannon Keegan, a woman named Emely wanted her to watch her 6-year-old boy, who was in a wheelchair. “I wanted to be able to take care of him and her, and help her, and if she’s willing to pay me that much, I’m willing to do that,” Keegan said.

Then things got a bit strange. Emily sent Keegan a check for $3,400 and told her to deduct her pay and send the remaining $3,060 to a wheelchair seller. Keegan thought it was weird, but she needed the pay.

“I’m hurting for money at this point. So I was all for it,” says Keegan. Then she noticed something odd. “The check came from Fresno, a Credit Union in Fresno, California. But she was supposedly coming from Texas.”

The curious mom then went to her mother-in-law for help who quickly saw a hidden VOID stamp on the check. It was all a scam.

“They almost got me. I almost put that in my account, and if that was the case, I would have been out $3,000,” she said.

Now Keegan is warning others to be cautious when taking personal checks and to carefully examine each one. If something seems off, ask for a second opinion or speak with a bank representative before cashing.
