Terminally Ill Mom Breaks Down In Tears As Down Syndrome Son Scores Surprise Touchdown With Team

In a small Michigan town, as the Novi High Wildcats took the field last Friday night, out front, waving the wildcat proudly was number 24, Robby Heil. A senior with Down syndrome, Robby is the football team’s hydration manager and most beloved member of the team. On the sideline, snapping photos, was his proud mother. And she had no idea that her son was about to have the experience of a lifetime

The devoted mom recently found out that she has bone cancer, and was dying. The Wildcats coach contacted the opposing team weeks before last Friday’s game and coordinated a special play for Robbie during the second quarter. Robbie took to the field with his teammates, grabbed a handoff from the quarterback and raced to the end zone with his team, crowd, and mother cheering him all the way to a touchdown.

The moment Heil’s mother, Debbie, saw her son score the point she was so overwhelmed that she collapsed with joy. The moment of triumph for her son simply encompassed her in happiness and gratitude for those who made it possible. In a post-game interview, she made mention of the movie character Rudy and how proud she was of her son.

“I dropped to the ground because I was so emotional when I saw him make that touchdown,” Debbie Heil said. “I’ve always been proud of him being the water boy, or as people call him the hydration manager, but this was incredible. He’s Rudy tonight. He’s Rudy.”
