The average cost for a police dog can range from $10,000 to $15,000 — but now, cops are turning to their local shelters. And they’re not only saving money; they’re saving lives.
When someone says the name “Pit Bull,” most people think of a vicious dog. There is no other breed that stirs up so much emotion. They are idolized, feared, respected, hated and loved intensely by different types of people. People are so afraid of them that they have even tried to ban them from entire cities.
But while they have a bad reputation, Pit Bulls they’ve proven time and time again that they can be just as sweet and loving as any other dog.
When you adopt a Pit Bull, you have a friend for life, through thick and thin. While Pit Bulls are not good guard dogs because they just love people so much, they may intercede if someone threatens “their” humans.
But there are plenty of programs that are trying to prove pit bulls deserve just as much love and praise as other breeds do.
One of them is the Animal Farm Foundation, who have been collaborating with Austin Pets Alive! and Universal K9 to train pit bulls to be official police canines!
Now, more and more police forces are adopting an ingenious idea to get more trained K9 partners, while also providing homes for precious pit bulls.

Pit bulls are incredibly obedient and can be trained to do almost anything that their owners need, so it only makes sense that they would be great police dogs!

But the poor pits get a bad reputation for being dangerous and have been victims of legislation trying and ban them from entire communities.

Fortunately, the police training is helping to change how people see them by showing that they can be well-trained, protective, and professional animals.
In their training, they learn everything from narcotics, explosives, cadaver, and arson detection to criminal apprehension.

“Any dog that has the drive, confidence, and desire to work can do it! Breed does not dictate a dog’s ability to work,” explained Universal K9 founder Brad Croft.

Training rescued pit bulls also means that the police spend a lot less money.
If they weren’t adopted by the trainers and turned into police dogs, there’s a chance that the poor pit bulls would have been euthanized in their shelters.
Trainers at Police departments across the nation have full faith that pit bulls are perfect for their training — in fact, the only difficulty they have ever had with the breed is getting them to be aggressive toward people because they love us so much!
