Father Stormed Into Hospital Armed With a Gun To Save His Son's Life

Good fathers would do anything to protect their children. Even if that means going to jail for it. This is the story of George Pickering, who took desperate measures when hospital staff decided to pull the plug on his son who they said was brain dead.

Doctors told Pickering’s ex-wife that George Pickering III was brain dead and she made the decision to end his life. But dad was not convinced.

George II said, “I felt hopeless. They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors.” That’s when he took action. He believed his son would make it out of it, so he went to the hospital with a gun. He threatened the staff, demanding to let them see his son.

The hospital staff had no choice. They allowed George II to see his son. The man locked himself in with his son, wanting to prove to the doctors that he wasn’t brain dead. SWAT arrived at the scene and started negotiating with George II.

“I knew if I had three or four hours that night that I would know whether George was brain dead,” Pickering said.

It was a good thing he locked himself in with his son. George II said, “During that three hours, George squeezed my hand three or four times on command.”

After confirming that his son wasn’t brain dead George II peacefully turned himself in. It was all worth it in order to save his son.

George II was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but one was later dismissed and the other lessened to a state jail felony. “This case has always been about a father protecting his son, when his son couldn’t protect himself,” Pickering’s lawyer Phoebe Smith said.

Thankfully, Pickering was released and was able to reunite with his son who has fully recovered.

“The important thing is I’m alive and well, my father is home and we’re together again,” George said.

This man risked everything because he had faith in God, and knew a miracle would happen.
