Hardened Teacher's Secret Left All His Students Dismayed, Reveals 20-Year Long Service

From the hallways at St. Francis High School in California, you could hear the bellows of a man with the reputation of being a bit of a drudge. While his students thought he was just a hardened teacher with no compassion whatsoever, math teacher Jim O’Connor had been doing something great for the last 20 years.

While the 70-year-old Vietnam vet admits he’s not there make school fun or to entertain students, that doesn’t mean his heart isn’t in the right place. For years, the students thought that was all there was to him.

That’s until senior Pat McGoldrick, the leader of the blood drive at his school, discovered something strange during a visit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Whenever he told anyone that he attended St. Francis High, he got the same response over and over – that he must know a wonderful person named Jim O’Connor.

Pat found out that Mr. O’Connor had not only been the top blood donor at the Children’s Hospital, but that he had been volunteering 3 times a week for the last 20 years to help babies in need. When Pat spread the news, jaws dropped.

While almost unbelievable to his students, O’Connor had been doing much more than just teaching math. At Children’s Hospital, volunteer O’Conner steps in when parents can’t. He holds, feeds, and comforts their children. He even helps them sleep, and stays with them for however long he needs to.

All the staff who know him admire his selflessness – it’s safe to say that O’Connor has a big heart.
