Gavel, a German Shepherd recruited to train as a police dog, was fired not too long ago for the most adorable reason – he simply was too friendly to everyone he met.

As a puppy, Gavel trained with the police force to become part of a K9 unit. However, trainers say that he wasn’t exactly up for the task – he simply was too sociable and playful. Gavel loved meeting strangers and would rather play with them rather than doing serious police work.

Unfortunately, after months of training, Gavel’s career in law enforcement was essentially over. According to police, Gavel “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”

However, that didn’t mean Gavel was out of luck in helping serve the community. Gavel’s lovable personality meant he was perfect for a position under the Governor of Queensland. Gavel was hired as a “Vice-Regal Dog”, a title of much respect.

His duties include greeting visitors to Queensland’s Government House, and attending official functions with Governor Paul de Jersey. After serving as the Vice-Regal Dog for some time, many have said that Gavel has become a “valued and much-loved” part of Government House life.

Since he was hired, Gavel has outgrown at least four ceremonial coats, and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate.

“We hope Gavel’s with us for a long, long time into the future,” he said.
